Bénédicte in Guérande

I once lived in Paris, but my heart was in Brittany.

Not so much the Brittany of Breton houses, those solid, heavy artefacts of stone, of granite. When I separated, I decided to come here. And I finally found the right house. It was a long search; I didn’t like the renovations, they seemed to remove the spirit. And there it was: the previous owners had hidden the stones with concrete, so I had everything removed; the house was rediscovered, and I was too. The large windows look towards three different compass points, and I like to watch as the light changes throughout the day. My office is here – I’m a journalist. But in recent years I have begun to work on pottery: plates, bowls, vases. In various shades of white or green. I experiment with leaves and flowers I gather in my garden or on walks, perhaps on the beach; I use them to leave imprints on the clay. My house is open, and these are the dishes I use when I invite people to dinner, around the table. Including the village children, to whom I read my books of fables.
